Technically, that’s not entirely accurate.

In many businesses, especially on platforms — you don’t have one wallet per user.
Instead, a single wallet may handle funds for multiple users or purposes.
This is what is commonly referred to in practice as a pooled wallet structure.
On the blockchain, it looks like one wallet.
Internally, however, there may be:
- hundreds of user balances
- multiple transaction types
- different purposes linked to the same address
Where Problems Usually Start
In most cases, the issue isn’t the blockchain itself — it’s how the wallets are structured and documented.
Typical situations include:
- no clear mapping of wallet ownership
- mixing operational and treasury funds
- lack of clarity around custodial vs non-custodial holdings
- incomplete tracking of internal transfers
Over time, these small gaps create bigger problems — especially during reconciliation or reporting.
Why Pooled Wallets Need Extra Attention
With pooled wallets, the main challenge is simple:
the blockchain shows one balance, but internally there are many.
So the business has to ensure that:
- total wallet balance = total of all internal balances
If this is not regularly checked, differences can go unnoticed.
From an audit or finance perspective, this becomes a key risk area.

From a finance perspective, wallet structure is not just a technical detail — it directly affects how well your financial controls actually work.
Some practical steps that help:
- maintaining a clear list of all wallets and their purpose
- separating treasury, operational, and customer funds
- understanding who controls private keys
- performing regular wallet-level reconciliation

Final Thoughts
In crypto, a lot of focus is placed on transactions.

In many cases, before fixing accounting issues, the real starting point is simply:
getting clarity on how the wallets are actually set up.
